Sony Announces R-Rated Bloodborne Anime at CinemaCon 2026

Sony reignited interest in the Bloodborne franchise at CinemaCon 2026 by unveiling plans for an R-rated animated adaptation of the cult PlayStation horror game. The announcement quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the event, signaling a significant move for the property.

The anime project is being developed by Lyrical Animation, with YouTube personality Seán William McLoughlin attached as a producer. This involvement has drawn attention, highlighting Sony’s intention to position the adaptation as a major theatrical release rather than a low-profile streaming exclusive.

Originally launched in 2015 for PlayStation 4, Bloodborne was created by FromSoftware, the studio behind acclaimed titles such as Dark Souls, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. The game is renowned for its punishing combat mechanics set within a haunting and surreal world. The central locale, Yharnam, is a decaying, plague-ridden city that blurs the lines between reality and nightmare, leaving a lasting impression on players.

Despite its popularity, Bloodborne has remained untouched for years, with no sequels, remasters, or significant updates. This prolonged silence has become a defining feature of the franchise, especially as Sony frequently revisits and revitalizes other classic series.

In a notable shift, the timing of this announcement reflects the growing success of video game adaptations in Hollywood. Studios are increasingly embracing major gaming intellectual properties as serious cinematic projects. Sony appears to be capitalizing on this trend, with the Bloodborne anime positioned at the forefront of this evolving landscape.

Although the film is still in the early stages of development, the mere confirmation of its production has reignited mainstream interest in the franchise, fulfilling a long-standing desire among fans for new Bloodborne content.
