A reporter who visited Rockstar Games says the story of Jason and Lucia in GTA 6 appears to draw more from Red Dead Redemption 2 than from GTA 5. Jason Schreier shared that view after a behind-the-scenes visit to the studio.
Rockstar did not let Schreier play the game himself. Instead, he watched Rob Nelson, one of the studio’s development leads, control Jason in a session centred on the relationship between the two lead characters. Schreier said he had recently replayed the opening hour of GTA 5 and found its cast tiring, since they frequently insulted and shouted at one another.

Schreier described the pair as “two people who actually enjoy spending time together.” In the demo, Jason phoned Lucia to arrange a meeting and kissed her with a single button press when she arrived. The two then strolled through a park holding hands before heading to a gym, where Jason did squats and Lucia used the treadmill.
Bank scouting and a petrol station job in the demo
The session also covered the couple’s criminal side. Jason and Lucia scouted a bank as a possible target, but Jason called it off because there were too many guards. Later, the pair slipped into the back office of a petrol station, switched off an alarm and quietly took the cash.
Rockstar told the press that the game world includes hundreds of small interiors players can enter, such as offices and petrol stations. The feature also carries comments from Jennifer Kolbe, the studio’s head of publishing, and development leads Aaron Garbut, Phil Hooker and Rob Nelson.
What Rockstar has and has not explained
Rockstar has not said what shaped the GTA 6 story, and Schreier’s view rests on a brief, hands-off preview. The studio’s official summary says the tale begins with an easy job that goes wrong. It pulls Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy across the fictional state of Leonida, where they must rely on each other to survive.
For comparison, GTA 5 came out in September 2013 and featured three main characters, Michael, Franklin and Trevor, with a heavy focus on satire. Red Dead Redemption 2, released in October 2018, followed Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang through a slower, more emotional story about loyalty within the group.
GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
