What is nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must own before zakat becomes due. It is 52.5 tola (612.36 grams) of silver or 7.5 tola (87.48 grams) of gold. This calculator works out its rupee value from today's rates.
Should I use the silver or the gold nisab?
Many scholars and zakat organisations recommend the silver nisab because it is the more cautious choice and benefits more people in need, so it is selected by default. Some scholars allow the gold nisab. If the only zakatable asset you own is gold, the gold nisab applies, and the calculator switches to it automatically.
Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?
In the Hanafi school, which most Muslims in Pakistan follow, zakat is due on all gold and silver, including jewellery worn regularly. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools do not require zakat on permissible jewellery that is worn regularly. The calculator counts it by default; untick the option if you follow one of those schools.
Which debts can I deduct?
Deduct debts and bills that are due now, such as loans you must repay now, unpaid bills and rent that has fallen due. For a long-term loan, deduct only the instalment that is currently due, not the whole remaining balance.
When does zakat become due?
Zakat is due when your net zakatable wealth has stayed at or above nisab for one full lunar (Islamic) year. Many people calculate it on the same Islamic date every year, often in Ramadan.
Do I pay zakat on my house, car or household items?
No. Zakat is not due on the home you live in, your personal car, furniture, clothes or other items for personal use. Property or goods bought to sell are business stock and are zakatable at their current sale value.
