Ex-NFL QB Robert Griffin III Withdraws from USA Flag Football Team Selection

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has officially withdrawn from the selection process for the USA flag football team as it prepares for upcoming international tournaments and the sport’s Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The 36-year-old Heisman Trophy winner announced his decision on X, citing a scheduling conflict that prevents him from attending the 2026 USA Football training camp. Griffin revealed that he has a prior commitment to a military veterans’ event, which he prioritized over the camp, emphasizing that he did not want to occupy a roster spot that could go to other players competing for a place on the team.

Earlier in March, Griffin was named as one of four quarterbacks on the 24-man training camp roster. This group was set to be reduced ahead of the International Federation of American Flag Football World Championships, scheduled for August in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Since retiring from professional football in 2020, Griffin has transitioned into a career as a football analyst, working with ESPN and Fox. His NFL career highlights include being the second overall pick in the 2012 draft by Washington, earning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, and securing a Pro Bowl selection during his rookie season.
