Pakistan’s under-15 side, the Shaheens, were beaten 4-2 by Gambia in their historic debut at the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan. Pakistan had let a two-goal advantage slip away before the Gambians secured the win.
The Shaheens started brightly and scored the first two goals of the competition. The early impetus came from two sources, and the team’s attacking intent was clear from the outset.
Ameer Hamza and Baxi Hamal Khan fire Pakistan ahead
Ameer Hamza gave Pakistan the lead in the fifth minute. Receiving the ball on the right near the halfway line, he drove at the Gambian defence and sent a forceful strike beyond the goalkeeper.
Hamza was also involved in the second goal, winning a tackle that sent possession to Baxi Hamal Khan. Moving in from the left, Baxi produced a fine finish into the top corner to double Pakistan’s lead.
Gambia reduced the deficit before half-time and levelled early in the second half, when the ball slipped past Pakistan goalkeeper Shayan.
Gambia complete comeback as Shaheens respond
Gambia kept up the pressure early on, forcing Pakistan to defend deep. The Shaheens gradually settled, and Kaleemullah tested the Gambian goalkeeper more than three times, forcing a series of saves.
Gambia then completed the turnaround with a rapid counter-attack, as a player fired a powerful left-footed shot into the corner. A curling effort into the top corner added a fourth goal and sealed the 4-2 win.
Despite the defeat, Pakistan showed promise in attack, with Hamza and Baxi scoring impressive goals on the international stage. The match marked a historic milestone as the Shaheens began their campaign in Azerbaijan.
