The First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly has adopted three resolutions sponsored by Pakistan. The texts cover disarmament, regional arms control and security assurances for non-nuclear-weapon states. Two drew broad support, while the third was adopted without a vote.

The regional arms control resolution, co-sponsored by Pakistan and Belarus, passed on Monday with 180 votes in favour, two against and no abstentions. Reports from the UN meeting said India and Israel were the only countries to oppose it.

Regional arms control resolution and India’s objection

India’s representative argued that conventional arms control is a global matter and should not be handled mainly through regional or subregional frameworks. He said national security concerns reach beyond geographical borders.

A second text, titled “Confidence-building measures in the regional and subregional context”, was adopted without a vote, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office. Earlier, the committee had approved Pakistan’s resolution on assuring non-nuclear-weapon States against nuclear weapons by 122 votes to none, with 62 abstentions. A UN transcript of the October 27 meeting confirms that tally.

Pakistan’s long-standing role in UN disarmament work

The First Committee handles disarmament and international security and considers draft resolutions before passing them to the General Assembly for further action. Pakistan has pursued initiatives on conventional arms control, confidence-building measures and regional disarmament at the United Nations for decades.

Foreign Office statement on security assurances and arms control

In a statement on Tuesday, the Foreign Office said the outcome reflected ongoing international support for Pakistan’s efforts on security assurances and regional approaches to arms control. It argued that, amid heightened tensions and an eroding arms control architecture, the resolutions offered cooperative ways to reduce risks and build trust. In August 2026, Pakistan also assumed the presidency of the UN Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva.
