Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has added its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which landed in Islamabad on Sunday. It is the national carrier’s first wide-body jet, and the airline says it is part of efforts to refresh its fleet and grow its overseas flights.
The aircraft flew in from London on flight PK-786 and arrived at Islamabad International Airport, according to the airline’s spokesperson. PIA Chief Executive Officer Air Vice Marshal Amir Hayat received the jet at the airport.
Lease deal with Norse Atlantic Airways
The Dreamliner is leased from Norwegian carrier Norse Atlantic Airways. In October, PIA agreed with the Norwegian airline to acquire two Boeing 787-9 jets under an Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) arrangement, commonly called a wet lease.

Under that structure, Norse Atlantic supplies the aircraft along with its crew, maintenance and insurance. PIA can therefore increase its long-haul capacity without arranging every operational requirement itself. The deal was intended to meet rising demand for travel between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
Routes linking UK and Pakistani cities
According to an earlier announcement by the airline, the leased jet will serve London Heathrow and Manchester, as well as the Pakistani cities of Islamabad and Lahore. Hayat said the partnership would let PIA add capacity on UK routes and give passengers more options and connections.
Norse Atlantic Chief Executive Eivind Roald described the agreement as part of the company’s plan to place its aircraft with other airlines through ACMI partnerships.
Cabin features and seating capacity
The spokesperson said the jet offers modern technology, an in-flight entertainment system and a roomy, comfortable cabin, and that it supports the airline’s plan to upgrade operations and improve travel facilities. The Boeing 787-9 is a long-haul, twin-engine wide-body aircraft built with an emphasis on fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. Media reports put its seating capacity at 358 passengers.
This deal opens a fresh chapter for the airline as it works to grow its international network and strengthen its long-haul services.
