Petroleum dealers in Karachi have called for a forensic audit of oil refinery profits, arguing that a transparent review could show room to lower petrol prices by Rs50 per litre. The demand was made at an emergency meeting where participants discussed refinery earnings, fuel pricing and possible relief for consumers.

Dealers allege excessive refinery gains in Karachi meeting

Malik Khuda Bakhsh and Anwar Kamal were among the dealers urging a clear audit of every refinery’s financial affairs to establish its actual profits. Khuda Bakhsh said refineries had earned in three months what would normally be earned over a full year, and that a forensic audit would bring those profits into the open.

Kamal said consumers could receive relief of Rs40 to Rs50 per litre on petrol if the matter were properly examined. The dealers said a statement by the petroleum minister had confirmed their reservations. They alleged that refineries had made excessive profits and said consumers should get the relief they are owed.

The dealers also asked for a comprehensive audit of refinery financial records covering past earnings. They said this would help prevent further financial burdens on consumers.

Dealers seek seats on petroleum sector decision committees

The dealers also demanded representation on decision-making committees in the petroleum sector. They argued that key stakeholders should not be left out of policymaking.
