Sources say jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan expressed no grief over the loss of his party’s government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The details emerged from a meeting involving lawyer Salman Safdar, Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, according to a report citing sources.

PTI sources said senior party leaders discussed the meeting afterwards, and that it included the party’s secretary-general, its legal team, Khan and his wife. A PTI leader said Khan saw the KP government as a burden because of persistent complaints about its performance. Khan was quoted as saying: “The person who dethroned our government in KP actually did me a favor.”

Preliminary talks on proposed 28th Amendment

Preliminary discussions on the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment were held with Khan before his formal meeting with counsel Salman Safdar. Sources added that two more meetings with the founder are expected soon, when the party’s future political strategy will be finalised.

The meeting with Safdar lasted about 40 minutes and was described as a significant update after a months-long gap in restricted access to the jailed leader.

Detention and emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khan has been continuously incarcerated since August 5, 2023, when he was first arrested in Lahore following a conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case. The report said that as of late 2026 he had spent over three years behind bars across multiple sentences and pending trial proceedings in several political and state cases.

The report said the central authorities escalated security measures and political action against the provincial administration after the PTI long march demanding Khan’s release was announced and mobilised. A state of emergency was then declared in KP, leading to the suspension of the PTI-led provincial government and federal control over the region, amid clashes and legal action against key provincial party leaders.
