In a deadly assault in the Thor area of Chilas, located in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, three police officers lost their lives while four others, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), sustained injuries. The attack occurred on Monday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police vehicle, killing three officials instantly.
The injured DSP and other personnel were promptly transported to a hospital for urgent medical care. Security forces and rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene, securing the area and initiating a thorough search operation to apprehend the attackers. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Caretaker Interior Minister Sajid Ali Baig condemned the attack vehemently, describing it as a tragic and intolerable act of terrorism that undermines peace and security.
Meanwhile, in a separate event in Hangu district, three policemen were injured during a shooting while providing security to a polio vaccination team. The incident took place in the Chhapri Wazeeran area, where the injured officers were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. Following the attack, additional police forces were deployed, and the locality was sealed off to prevent further violence.
Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan remain the only countries where polio is still endemic, with militants frequently targeting vaccination teams and their security escorts. In response, Pakistan recently commenced its second nationwide anti-polio campaign for 2026, aiming to eradicate the disease despite ongoing security challenges.
