US Judge Halts Trump’s Attempt to Restrict Birthright Citizenship

In a significant development, a US federal judge has blocked former President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to restrict birthright citizenship. This ruling comes after the Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision declaring Trump’s previous efforts to limit citizenship for children born in the US to non-citizen parents illegal. The judge’s decision reinforces the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

Birthright citizenship, established by the 14th Amendment, grants automatic US citizenship to anyone born on American soil regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Trump’s administration had sought to reinterpret this long-standing principle, arguing that it encouraged illegal immigration. However, the Supreme Court’s majority opinion firmly rejected this interpretation, emphasizing the constitutional protections in place.

Meanwhile, this judicial setback for Trump highlights ongoing debates surrounding immigration policy and citizenship rights in the United States. The ruling preserves the status quo, ensuring that children born in the US continue to receive citizenship automatically. It also signals the judiciary’s role in upholding constitutional rights against executive attempts to alter immigration laws unilaterally.
