Approval for United States President Donald Trump has dropped to 31 percent, his lowest level yet in his political career, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The same survey shows his Republican Party at a major disadvantage. When respondents were asked whether they preferred an unnamed Democrat or an unnamed Republican, the Democrat led by 12 points.
Disapproval rises amid Iran war and fuel costs
Disapproval of Trump has grown steadily in recent months, especially since the US-Israel war on Iran began on February 28. The conflict has pushed up petrol and diesel prices and caused knock-on effects across the economy.
Several recent polls point to mounting problems for Trump and his party ahead of the midterm elections on November 3. The vote could decide which party controls the House and Senate.
Other surveys show weak numbers for Republicans
An NBC poll released on Sunday found 71 percent of Americans said the country was on the ‘wrong track’. It also found 55 percent would vote for the Democratic Party if an election were held that day.
A Washington Post/ABC/Ipsos poll, released on Monday, recorded a record-low approval rating of 33 percent for Trump. Seven in 10 respondents said petrol was becoming unaffordable.
