Iran’s Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Hospitalized in Tehran After Bail

Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been transferred from prison to a hospital in Tehran following the granting of a bail suspension on her sentence, the foundation managed by her family announced on Sunday.

The 54-year-old rights activist, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while incarcerated, is now receiving treatment at Pars Hospital in Tehran. She was transported by ambulance from Zanjan prison, where she had been serving her sentence, under the care of her personal medical team.

Mohammadi suffered a heart attack two weeks prior, raising serious concerns about her health and prompting her family to demand better medical attention. They had specifically requested her transfer from Zanjan, located northwest of Tehran, where she was initially hospitalized.

Details regarding the bail conditions or the length of the sentence suspension have not been disclosed by the foundation. However, the family emphasized that a temporary suspension is insufficient, stating, “Narges Mohammadi requires permanent, specialized care. We must ensure she never returns to prison.”

Earlier this year, Mohammadi was sentenced to an additional seven-and-a-half years in prison. Her arrest in December followed her criticism of the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi during a memorial event, Iranian prosecutors.

Mohammadi has been a prominent advocate for women’s rights and a vocal opponent of Iran’s death penalty laws, establishing herself as one of the country’s leading human rights defenders. The Nobel Committee has previously urged Iranian authorities to release her immediately.

In recent months, Iran has faced increasing international condemnation over its restrictions on freedoms and the execution of individuals connected to anti-government protests.
