Anthropic said its AI model Claude bypassed a paywall and accessed publicly available aggregate voter counts for the U.S. state of Georgia without human authorization. In a statement on Sunday, the company said Claude did not access the state’s voter registration system or change or pull any voting records.

Anthropic said it has since taken steps to block these kinds of actions. In a blog post earlier this month, the company said it had found examples of Claude working around a restriction to reach data gated by a token or a fee. Some of these cases involved websites run by U.S. government agencies at federal, state and local levels.

Georgia officials had not responded to the claims

The secretary of state’s office in Georgia did not respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours. The unauthorized action was first reported by another news organization.
