FIFA has announced that the United States will host the inaugural women’s football Club World Cup in 2028. The governing body made the announcement on Thursday, saying the decision reflected the country’s experience in organising FIFA tournaments, its mature infrastructure and services, and the strong level of stakeholder interest in women’s football there.

The tournament is scheduled for January 5 to 30, 2028, and will bring together 19 top-tier clubs from all six continental confederations. Asia, Africa, North America and South America will each have three clubs, Oceania will send one team, and six of Europe’s best sides will represent UEFA.

Seven clubs have already booked places

Seven teams have already secured their spots in the competition:

  • Arsenal (England)
  • Club America Femenil (Mexico)
  • Barcelona (Spain)
  • Gotham (United States)
  • Naegohyang (North Korea)
  • Corinthians (Brazil)
  • Wuhan Jiangda (China)

Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s chief women’s football officer, said these seven clubs and a dozen more would showcase the depth and strength of women’s club football to a worldwide audience. She added that the teams would have the chance to tell their stories, grow their fan bases and represent their clubs on the world stage.

Tournament delayed to clear space around 2028 Olympics

The event was originally slated for 2026, but FIFA pushed it back by two years. The new timing leaves a clear window after the 2027 women’s World Cup and ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The country has a record of staging large sporting events, including the men’s 2026 World Cup, which Spain won earlier this year. Chelsea are the reigning holders of the men’s FIFA Club World Cup, having beaten Paris St Germain in the 2025 final, which was also held in the United States.
