Lukaku’s Last-Minute Strike Keeps Napoli’s Champions League Hopes Alive at Verona

In a dramatic finish at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi on Saturday, Romelu Lukaku emerged as the hero for Napoli by netting a decisive last-minute goal that ensured a 2-1 victory over struggling Verona. This crucial strike marked Lukaku’s first goal of the season and played a pivotal role in keeping Napoli firmly in contention for a coveted Champions League qualification spot. The Belgian forward’s timely intervention came at the very end of the match, as he expertly converted a cross from Giovane, securing all three points for the third-placed side.

Napoli appeared to be heading towards a frustrating draw after Verona’s Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro equalized in the 65th minute, canceling out Rasmus Hojlund’s early opener. The visitors had taken an encouraging lead early on, but the resilience of the home team threatened to derail Napoli’s ambitions. Lukaku’s goal, arriving in the dying moments of the game, not only salvaged the win but also provided a significant boost to Napoli’s campaign, especially as their rivals Como and Atalanta continue to push hard for a top-four finish in Serie A.

Despite this important victory, Napoli’s hopes of defending their Serie A title have all but faded. The team trails the league leaders Inter Milan by a substantial margin of 11 points, a gap that has widened due to a season plagued by injuries and inconsistent performances. Inter, who are set to host Genoa in the late Saturday fixture, have maintained their dominance at the summit, making Napoli’s task increasingly difficult as the season progresses.

The match also highlighted Napoli’s ongoing struggles with squad availability, as several key midfielders were absent. Scott McTominay, Kevin De Bruyne, and Andre-Frank Anguissa were all sidelined, alongside captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo, which forced the team to adapt and rely on their depth. Meanwhile, Verona, under the guidance of interim coach Paolo Sammarco following the recent dismissal of Paolo Zanetti, remain entrenched at the bottom of the table. Their current position, 10 points adrift of safety, reflects a dire run of form that has seen them fail to win in 12 consecutive matches.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Como continued their impressive push for European football with a commanding 3-1 victory over fellow strugglers Lecce. The win keeps Como just two points behind Roma, who currently occupy the fourth Champions League spot, and five points shy of Napoli. The team, managed by Cesc Fabregas, is gearing up for a crucial first-leg Italian Cup semi-final clash against Inter on Tuesday. Notably, star forward Nico Paz began the match on the bench but was introduced midway through the second half after Como had already established a two-goal lead.

Como’s comeback was sparked after conceding an early goal to Lassana Coulibaly’s impressive header. However, the hosts responded emphatically before halftime with goals from Tasos Douvikas, Jesus Rodriguez, and Marc Oliver Kempf, securing a comfortable victory. This result has propelled Como two points clear of sixth-placed Juventus, who face Roma in a key fixture as they strive to remain in the Champions League race following their recent elimination from Europe’s premier club competition by Galatasaray.
