Winter’s first spell of rain and hail swept through Murree and nearby localities on Friday, pushing temperatures down sharply. The district administration responded by issuing an alert over possible flooding and landslides.
Thunderstorms and heavy showers mixed with hail lashed Murree, Kotli Sattian and Kahuta, while chilly winds deepened the cold. The temperature in Murree fell to 8 degrees Celsius.
Further rain and storms forecast across northern regions
The Pakistan Meteorological Department said more rain is likely in Murree and other hilly areas over the next 24 hours. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected in parts of upper and central Punjab and Azad Kashmir within the next two to four hours.
The department named Jhelum, Khushab, Sargodha, Muzaffarabad, Bagh and Kotli among places likely to receive rain. It also warned that strong winds could affect the region.
The Murree district administration cautioned that heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding in streams and raise the risk of landslides in mountainous areas. Residents and visitors were urged to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel.
Power disruption and emergency teams placed on high alert
Strong winds and heavy rain disrupted electricity supplies in parts of Murree, according to a local report. Deputy Commissioner Murree directed the Water and Power Development Authority, Rescue 1122, the Water and Sanitation Agency and other relevant departments to remain on high alert and be ready to respond to emergencies.
These agencies were instructed to act promptly on incidents, assist residents and restore essential services in affected areas. The weather change is expected to bring further cooling to Murree and its surroundings.
Tourists planning to visit the hill station were advised to check the latest weather conditions, drive carefully on slippery roads and follow instructions issued by the authorities.
