Mohamed Salah to Depart Liverpool After Nine Illustrious Years

Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the conclusion of the current season, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield. The Egyptian forward, who joined the club from Roma in 2017, has made 435 appearances and netted 255 goals, placing him third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.

During his tenure, Salah secured four Premier League Golden Boots and played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2019/20 and 2024/25 league title wins. He also helped the club lift the 2019 Champions League trophy, alongside other silverware including the Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.

This season, Salah’s Premier League goal tally has dipped to five, a stark contrast to the 29 goals he scored during last season’s title-winning campaign. Speculation about his future intensified following a public fallout with Liverpool manager Arne Slot in December. Salah criticized the club for sidelining him for three consecutive matches and revealed a strained relationship with the Dutch coach.

In a heartfelt farewell video shared on social media, Salah reflected on his deep connection with Liverpool. “The day has come,” he said. “I never imagined how much this club, this city, and these people would mean to me. Liverpool is more than just a football club—it’s a passion, a history, a spirit.”

He also touched on the emotional challenges faced by the team, including the tragic loss of teammate Diogo Jota in a car accident last July. “We celebrated victories and endured the hardest times together,” Salah said. He expressed gratitude to his teammates, both past and present, and to the fans for their unwavering support throughout his career highs and lows.

“Leaving is never easy,” he added. “You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you, and this club will forever be home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, confirmed uncertainty over the player’s next destination, stating, “We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows.”

Liverpool’s official statement acknowledged Salah’s decision, describing his career at the club as “illustrious” and confirming an agreement to conclude his time at Anfield after the 2025-26 season.

Recently, Salah was forced off due to injury after scoring in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Galatasaray, which secured their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. He missed the subsequent 2-1 Premier League loss to Brighton.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher predicted Salah would aim for a memorable farewell, possibly by inspiring Liverpool to Champions League glory. “Knowing Salah’s mindset and competitive spirit, he will be setting his sights on the greatest of all possible goodbyes, inspiring his team to victory in the Champions League final in Budapest,” Carragher wrote. “Do not bet against the perfect send-off.”
