The government has asked the PPP and the MQM to submit names for a proposed parliamentary committee on electoral reforms. Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry wrote to the parties’ chief whips, Aijaz Jakhrani of the PPP and Amin ul Haq of the MQM, seeking their nominations.

Based on each party’s representation in Parliament, the PPP would have five members on the committee and the MQM one. The ruling PML-N would hold nine seats on the body.

Request follows letter from NA Speaker

Chaudhry said the names were requested in light of a letter from National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. He earlier said he would begin meeting parliamentary leaders of all parties to invite them to join the committee.

Committee to deliberate and advise parliament

PPP Senator Sherry Rehman said a resolution had been passed on the proposal of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to set up the committee, which would include members of both Houses. The committee would deliberate on electoral reforms and present its recommendations to parliament for approval.
