Opposition leaders in both houses of Parliament have signalled they may join a proposed election reforms committee alongside the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The panel would include members from all parties, ruling and opposition, in the National Assembly and Senate. Opposition leaders Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas want time to consult the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership.
Next steps for the election reforms panel
PPP sources said the opposition will soon reply to the party’s invitation. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq is also expected to write formally to the opposition, inviting it to committee meetings.
Aims of the committee on election laws
The committee aims to recommend ways to ensure transparency in future elections. It will also suggest amendments to the laws governing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
