Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has explained a social media post about a teacher accused of hitting a student with his shoe, saying the comment was aimed at the man’s alleged conduct toward the child. She made the clarification on Saturday in Lahore, after the remark drew sharp criticism online.
The post was shared alongside a photograph of the teacher, who police arrested after he allegedly assaulted a student over the theft of a box of toffees from a school canteen. In her comment, the chief minister wrote: “Beat him black and blue across his face with a shoe. Shame.”
Chief minister says she wrote the comment herself
Many social media users read the remark as an instruction to beat the teacher. One user, Cheema Vai, argued that publicly humiliating a teacher through social media was not the kind of governance expected from the Punjab chief minister.
Another user, Umer Farooq, said that no one should act as judge and jury, however serious a crime might be. He warned that doing so weakens the rule of law and could fuel disorder in society.
Mickey Gill also questioned the wording and suggested that an administrator might have written the post. Maryam Nawaz replied that she had written it herself, and that she meant the teacher had beaten the child so hard that he was bruised, striking him across the face with a shoe. “I hope you get it now,” she said.
Petrol pump slap video shared by chief minister
In a separate post, Maryam Nawaz shared a video showing a petrol pump employee slapping a man at a petrol station in Lahore. The incident took place in Jubilee Town, where the man allegedly assaulted and threatened the employee after being asked not to smoke at the pump because of the risk of fire.
The chief minister also shared footage of the suspect’s arrest on X. The clip showed the employee slapping the man when he was brought to the police station.
Describing the video, Maryam Nawaz wrote: “This is a tight slap in the face of those entitled, spoiled brats who look down upon the poor as if they were lesser human beings.”
