The Sindh government on Saturday suspended Dr Osama Sheikh, the medico-legal officer who carried out the first post-mortem on Mir Raza Ali. The move followed remarks in a judicial commission report into Ali’s death that raised concerns about the examination.

The Sindh Home Department has instructed the relevant authorities to begin departmental proceedings against Dr Osama. The commission reportedly described his conduct as immature and childish.

Inquiry extended to a senior health official

Acting on the commission’s recommendations, the Home Department has ordered an inquiry into Special Secretary of Health Shehryar Gul Memon. It has also written to the chief secretary asking that the commission’s recommendations be put into effect.

Before the suspension, Dr Osama had insisted that he stood by his initial post-mortem report. He did not endorse the final report, which is dated August 11, 2026.

Doctor says he doubted his own findings

Appearing before the inquiry commission for a second time, Dr Osama told the media that he had worked under the guidance and supervision of Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya. He said he had withdrawn his endorsement of the final report, calling his decision to sign it a mistake driven by self-doubt.

He said a senior doctor had told a class, including him, that the bullet had entered from the back, which led him to question his own assessment. He also claimed Dr Summaiya had not informed him before August 5, 2026, that he had made an error or that the matter was being discussed in the media.

Dr Osama added that he had never received a show-cause notice alleging a mistake in post-mortem No. 329.

Timeline of the post-mortem and exhumation

He said he finalised the initial report and sent it to Dr Summaiya via WhatsApp on July 31, 2026. The next day he reported for duty and submitted a physical copy.

Mir Raza‘s body was found in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on July 29. An initial post-mortem examination was conducted, followed by a second examination after the body was exhumed.
