Punjab Considers Early Summer Vacation for Schools from May 22 to August 2

LAHORE: The Punjab government is contemplating an early summer vacation for schools, potentially running from May 22 to August 2. This was disclosed by Punjab Minister for School and Higher Education, Rana Sikandar Hayat, on Saturday. The minister indicated that a final decision on the vacation schedule would be announced by May 11.

In addition to adjusting the school calendar, discussions are underway about organizing summer camps during the holiday period to engage students. These developments follow a warning issued by the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) regarding above-normal temperatures and rainfall expected across the province until July.

The Met Office has forecasted heatwaves, flash floods, urban flooding, and windstorms that could impact various areas in the coming months. It also cautioned that rising temperatures might lead to strong winds, dust storms, and hailstorms, posing risks to seasonal crops, vegetables, and orchards.

Specifically, the PDMA highlighted that May’s above-average temperatures could increase the chances of heat spikes and heatwave conditions, particularly in Punjab’s plains. Last year, summer vacation was initially set from May 28 to August 14 but was extended until August 31 for all public and private schools due to extreme weather conditions.
