ISLAMABAD: The government and the People’s Party are holding talks on legislative cooperation, sources said on Sunday, amid reported differences over laws on the economy and tax reforms.
Sources said the party’s reservations over several proposed laws persist, and legal teams from both sides are discussing cooperation in Parliament.
Provincial autonomy laws and CCI approval dispute
The People’s Party has objected to provincial legislation, pointing to the advance approval needed from the Council of Common Interest (CCI) for laws related to provincial autonomy.
PPP sources accused the government of deliberately delaying advance CCI approval of certain laws. They quoted the government as intending to pass some laws directly through Parliament, “against the rules”.
Both sides agree to defer disputed bills
Sources said the two teams have agreed to defer passage of the disputed bills from Parliament. Talks are also underway on laws linked to the finance ministry and the Maritime Affairs Act, PPP sources added.
