President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed their administration’s dedication to protecting and advancing press freedom in observance of World Press Freedom Day. This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” underscores the vital role of journalism in fostering democratic values and national cohesion.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of responsible reporting, truthful information, and credible journalism as pillars for democracy and a supportive environment for media independence. President Zardari extended his greetings to media professionals worldwide while highlighting the escalating global challenges to press freedom, including misinformation, disinformation, misuse of artificial intelligence, algorithmic manipulation, and pressures exerted by dominant tech platforms and social media companies.
He warned that these threats have the potential to distort public discourse and undermine democratic principles. Reiterating the constitutional guarantees under Articles 19 and 19-A, the president stressed that a free press is indispensable for ensuring accountability, transparency, and democratic governance.
In a significant development, the president noted that this year’s theme reflects the interdependence of peace and truth, which in turn relies on courageous journalism. He cautioned that freedom must be accompanied by responsibility, urging media outlets to prioritize accuracy over speed and maintain impartiality rather than succumbing to partisanship. Public trust, he added, is the most precious asset of a free press and must be diligently earned and safeguarded.
President Zardari also recalled Pakistan’s unified stance during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, commending the media for effectively countering false narratives and fostering national solidarity. He paid homage to journalists who have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth, calling for enhanced protections and safer working environments for media personnel.
Furthermore, he appealed to citizens to reject misinformation and support credible journalism. He urged both federal and provincial governments to enact and enforce laws that create a secure and enabling atmosphere for journalists nationwide. The president underscored that authentic, impartial, and verified reporting forms the cornerstone of journalistic integrity, while cautioning media professionals against spreading propaganda, fake news, or unverified content.
He highlighted that responsible journalism plays a crucial role in promoting peace by shaping informed public opinion and fostering international understanding. Acknowledging the sacrifices made by journalists in the line of duty, he emphasized the need to adapt to digital transformations without compromising credibility.
Warning against the growing prevalence of fake news and disinformation campaigns, the president called on journalists to uphold verification, integrity, and professional ethics. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for press freedom.
Finally, he noted that the media can contribute constructively to strengthening international relations, economic cooperation, and social harmony. While recognizing the importance of speed in today’s digital era, he insisted that it must never come at the expense of accuracy and verification, as maintaining public trust remains journalism’s most valuable asset.
