Israeli Settlers Set Fire to Buildings in West Bank Amid Rising Tensions

Palestinian residents reported a series of violent attacks late Saturday night, when Israeli settlers set fire to buildings and vehicles across several villages in the occupied West Bank. The destruction included homes and a medical center, intensifying fears amid an already volatile situation in the region. Following these incidents, the Israeli military issued a statement condemning all forms of violence and confirmed that troops had been deployed to the affected areas to restore order.

The attacks occurred against the backdrop of a surge in settler violence targeting Palestinians since the outbreak of the recent Middle East conflict. Journalists visiting the village of Fandaqumiya, located southwest of Jenin, witnessed the aftermath firsthand, documenting the blackened remains of a house and several burnt-out cars. In another village, Jalud, a medical facility was deliberately set ablaze, and Hebrew graffiti was scrawled on the walls of a mosque, further inflaming tensions between the communities.

One of the victims, Hassan Al-Zoubi, whose home was destroyed in Fandaqumiya, described the harrowing attack. He recounted how approximately 200 assailants, believed to have come from the nearby Homesh settlement, launched the assault. “They threw Molotov cocktails through our windows and set the house on fire right before our eyes,” Zoubi said, highlighting the scale and brutality of the violence. Meanwhile, reports from the Palestinian news agency WAFA indicated that several Palestinians sustained injuries during these coordinated attacks.

In response, the Israeli army confirmed that soldiers had been dispatched to multiple Palestinian villages following reports of arson and disturbances caused by Israeli civilians. The military emphasized its condemnation of violence in any form and reiterated its commitment to maintaining security and public order in the region. This statement came shortly after an Israeli civilian was killed in an incident involving a Palestinian vehicle, which Israeli police are currently investigating for potential terror links, though no official confirmation has been made.

The recent wave of settler violence is part of a disturbing trend that has escalated since the US-Israeli conflict with Iran intensified. Since the beginning of the Gaza war triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, six Palestinians have been fatally shot in settler attacks across the West Bank. The Ramallah-based Palestinian health ministry has been tracking these incidents, underscoring the growing insecurity faced by Palestinian communities.

The Palestinian presidency strongly condemned these “terrorist attacks carried out by Israeli colonist gangs,” describing them as a dangerous escalation for which the Israeli occupation government bears full responsibility. This condemnation was echoed internationally, as diplomats from thirteen European countries and Canada jointly denounced the rise in settler violence. They called for an immediate end to the aggressive attempts by settlers to seize Palestinian land, highlighting the broader implications for regional stability.

It is important to note that alongside approximately three million Palestinians, over 500,000 Israeli settlers live in West Bank settlements and outposts, which are considered illegal under international law. The occupation of the West Bank, ongoing since 1967, has been a focal point of conflict and tension for decades. Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, violence in the West Bank has sharply increased, with at least 1,050 Palestinians killed by Israeli troops or settlers, including both militants and civilians, Palestinian health ministry data. On the Israeli side, official figures report 45 deaths, including soldiers and civilians, resulting from Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations.

These recent attacks by settlers represent a troubling escalation in the cycle of violence that continues to plague the West Bank. The destruction of homes, medical facilities, and the targeting of civilians only deepen the humanitarian crisis and complicate efforts toward peace. As the situation remains highly volatile, the international community watches closely, urging restraint and dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.
