The power crisis in Karachi has deepened after K-Electric began loadshedding on more than 150 previously exempted feeders, according to reports. Outages in several areas have now lasted 12 to 15 hours, adding to residents’ distress.

In some localities, standard daily loadshedding has risen from 9 hours to 12 hours. Under the new schedule, low-loss areas have been placed alongside high-loss zones.

Exempted areas face shutdowns and unannounced outages

Critics say the city’s sole power utility is shifting the cost of power theft and unpaid bills onto law-abiding citizens. Shutdowns lasting three to six hours now occur regularly in exempted residential areas.

Beyond scheduled loadshedding, unannounced interruptions of 8 to 15 hours continue citywide, residents report.

Affected Karachi areas and K-Electric’s stated reasons

Residents say K-Electric frequently blames the outages on maintenance work and technical faults. Affected areas include North Karachi, Landhi, DHA, Clifton, PECHS, Liaquatabad, Orangi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, North Nazimabad, Federal B. Area, Malir and Manzoor Colony.
