The Punjab government has decided to let Basant festivities take place across the province during the second week of March 2027, sources said on Wednesday. The same sources said the plan also covers regulating kite production, controlling prices and adding safety measures through legislation.
According to the sources, an administrative plan allows kites to be made at designated sites, and a strategy has been drawn up to manage the cost of kites and strings. The new law will include safety measures and rules for kite-flying. The designated locations and detailed rules are expected to be announced soon.
Lahore festival dates and Kashmir Day pause
Last month, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved a 10-day Basant festival in Lahore running from January 29 to February 7, 2027, after the festival returned this year. A spokesperson said celebrations will be suspended for one day, February 5, to observe Kashmir Day.
Maryam said Basant would help showcase Punjab’s historic cultural traditions. She directed the relevant authorities to ensure the strongest possible safety arrangements.
Earlier Lahore celebrations drew strong response
Lahore held its first Basant in more than two decades earlier this year, after the provincial government lifted a ban on kite-flying. The three-day event ran under strict rules, with lit-up roads and rooftop gatherings continuing late into the night. Authorities also offered a free transport service.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb called the celebrations a victory for Lahore and Pakistan. She said an even more vibrant Basant would follow the next year.
