Putin Denounces Khamenei Assassination as Grave Breach of Morality and Law

In a strong rebuke on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing the act as a blatant and cynical breach of both moral principles and international law. This statement came in response to the recent killing attributed to the United States and Israel, which has further escalated tensions in an already volatile Middle East region.

Tehran has long been recognized as one of Moscow’s closest strategic partners, particularly throughout Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. The alliance between the two nations has deepened over recent years, with Iran providing diplomatic and logistical support to Russia. Prior to the US-Israeli strikes, the Kremlin had urged all parties to exercise restraint, emphasizing the fragile nature of regional stability.

On Sunday, the Kremlin released a formal letter from President Putin addressed to Masoud Pezeshkian, an Iranian official, in which Putin extended his heartfelt condolences over the loss of Khamenei. In the letter, Putin characterized the assassination as an act carried out with cold cynicism, violating fundamental human ethics and the established norms of international conduct. He praised Khamenei as an exceptional statesman who played a pivotal role in fostering and advancing the close relationship between Russia and Iran.

Putin also requested Pezeshkian to relay his deepest sympathies and unwavering support to Khamenei’s family, the Iranian government, and the entire Iranian population during this difficult time. The Russian president’s message underscored the significance of Khamenei’s leadership in shaping bilateral ties and his enduring legacy in the region.

The day before, Russia had publicly denounced the attacks on Iran, labeling them a reckless and dangerous provocation that could trigger a broader catastrophe across the Middle East. This condemnation highlights Moscow’s concern over the potential for escalating conflict, which could destabilize an already fragile geopolitical landscape.

Additionally, on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov engaged in a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the call was initiated by Iran, reflecting the close diplomatic communication channels maintained between the two countries. This dialogue is part of ongoing efforts to coordinate responses and manage the fallout from recent developments.

It is important to recall that in 2025, Russia and Iran formalized a strategic partnership treaty aimed at deepening cooperation across various sectors, including military collaboration. This pact has further solidified their alliance, making Moscow’s condemnation of the assassination and its call for restraint all the more significant in the context of their shared geopolitical interests.
