Rawalpindi Doctors Successfully Reattach Severed Hand of 5-Year-Old Boy

Doctors at Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi achieved a remarkable surgical success by reattaching the completely severed hand of a five-year-old boy from Jhelum. The child was admitted on August 28 in critical condition after an axe attack resulted in the total amputation of his hand.

Recognizing the urgency, a specialized team from the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department, led by Dr Tayyab and Dr Ambreen, promptly initiated an emergency replantation procedure. This complex surgery involved meticulous microvascular techniques to reconnect the severed hand to the boy’s body.

Throughout the prolonged operation, the surgical team carefully repaired critical blood vessels, veins, and other essential structures using advanced microsurgical methods. Their efforts successfully restored blood flow to the reattached hand, a significant achievement considering the patient’s young age and the injury’s severity.

In a significant development, the doctors emphasized that hand replantation in young children is an intricate and time-intensive process. They noted that the success of such surgeries largely depends on rapid hospital admission, proper preservation of the amputated limb, and the immediate availability of a skilled microsurgical team.

The medical experts also provided important guidance for the public on handling severed body parts in accidents. They advised against placing the amputated part directly on ice, as this can cause tissue damage. Instead, the limb should be wrapped or sealed in a clean plastic bag, which should then be placed in a separate container filled with ice.

They stressed the importance of quickly transporting the injured person to a healthcare facility equipped for microsurgery. Thanks to timely medical intervention and the expertise of the Holy Family Hospital surgical team, the five-year-old boy’s severed hand was successfully reattached, marking a noteworthy medical accomplishment.
