Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned home to a fraught political landscape after more than 10 months in exile. She announced her arrival on X on Sunday.
“I am here. With you,” Machado wrote. Her ally, former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, soon confirmed the news, saying she was on Venezuelan soil.
Machado’s exile followed the US seizure of Maduro
Machado had left Venezuela a month earlier to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway. In January, the US seized her opponent, President Nicolás Maduro.
Delcy Rodríguez sworn in as interim president
The Trump administration then backed Maduro’s deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, as leader. She was sworn in as interim president and later signed an oil deal with the US. More details are expected to follow.
