Dr Asim Hussain Diagnosed with Stage-4 Cancer but Condition Stable

Dr Asim Hussain, former federal minister and a longtime close associate of President Asif Ali Zardari, has been diagnosed with stage-4 cancer. Despite the severity of his condition, his health remains stable and is reportedly improving. He is receiving treatment primarily in Pakistan, with additional care in London.

Recently, Dr Hussain traveled with President Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to Austria. Following the trip, he accompanied President Zardari to London, where he is currently staying. He confirmed that his cancer is under control and expressed satisfaction with the medical care available in Pakistan, emphasizing that the country provides access to necessary medicines and diagnostic facilities.

He highlighted that Pakistan offers a comprehensive range of treatments, including branded medicines and advanced diagnostic tests, some of which may not be accessible in London. Dr Hussain underscored the critical importance of early cancer detection in Pakistan, describing cancer as a significant and escalating health challenge. In a notable initiative, he revealed plans to establish a cytogenetics laboratory in Pakistan, which he believes will be the first of its kind in the country, aiming to enhance early diagnosis capabilities.

In a significant shift away from politics, Dr Hussain stated his intention to focus on healthcare and public service rather than political engagement. He declined to comment on recent political developments but expressed optimism about the future, acknowledging that difficult times are often temporary and can be overcome.

He urged collaboration between Pakistani doctors and the government to address the rising cancer threat, noting that approximately one in every six or seven patients is affected by the disease. Early diagnosis, he emphasized, is crucial for effective treatment and control.

Dr Hussain’s friendship with President Zardari spans several decades, beginning during their student years at Cadet College Petaro. Their bond has endured through Zardari’s political career, with Hussain becoming one of his most trusted confidants both politically and personally.
