US ICE to Acquire $16.7M Electric Shock Gloves for Enforcement Use

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has finalized a $16.7 million contract to procure 6,000 pairs of electric shock gloves. These gloves are designed to deliver painful electric shocks, intended to aid officers in controlling detainees during enforcement operations. This move comes amid ongoing criticism of ICE’s use of force and treatment of migrants in detention facilities.

Electric shock gloves are a relatively new tool in law enforcement, allowing officers to incapacitate individuals at close range without resorting to more lethal measures. However, human rights advocates have raised concerns about the potential for abuse and excessive force, especially given ICE’s controversial history. The contract signals ICE’s commitment to expanding its non-lethal enforcement capabilities despite public scrutiny.

In a significant development, this procurement highlights the broader debate over immigration enforcement methods in the United States. The use of such devices could impact detainee treatment protocols and spark further discussions on law enforcement accountability. Meanwhile, ICE continues to face pressure to balance operational effectiveness with respect for human rights and legal standards.
