PM Shehbaz Urges Opposition for Dialogue on Democracy and Economy Charter

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif renewed his call on Saturday for the opposition to engage in dialogue aimed at establishing a “Charter of Economy and a Charter of Democracy.” He emphasized that the nation’s unity and Pakistan’s interests must take precedence over political rivalries.

Addressing the National Assembly session a day after presenting the federal budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, the prime minister reiterated his invitation to the opposition. He underscored his commitment to ensuring balanced development across all four provinces, describing it as a key responsibility of his office.

“There is no conflict with PTI; they remain our brothers,” he remarked, highlighting that the parliamentary house operates like a family. Despite political differences, he stressed that Pakistan remains the shared foundation for all members. “Political views and visions may vary, but our existence is tied to Pakistan,” he added, recognizing the sacrifices made for the country as invaluable.

On the issue of provincial autonomy, Shehbaz Sharif affirmed that there is consensus on provinces having full control over their resources. He pointed to specific initiatives in Balochistan, noting that farmers there have received solar panels valued at Rs75 billion. Additionally, a major highway project connecting Gwadar to Chaman is underway, with an investment of Rs300 billion. The prime minister clarified that this infrastructure development is a government obligation rather than a political concession.

Highlighting fiscal matters, he mentioned that Balochistan’s share under the 2010 NFC Award has been doubled, stressing that this increase is a right rather than a favor.

In a significant acknowledgment, the prime minister paid tribute to the armed forces and law enforcement personnel, noting that 22 soldiers were martyred just three days prior. He praised their relentless efforts in combating terrorism and safeguarding millions of citizens.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Mahmood Khan Achakzai opened the budget debate by advocating for resolving political disputes through dialogue. He expressed readiness to offer unconditional support for the stability of the political system and emphasized the importance of respecting electoral mandates.

Achakzai urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to strengthen parliamentary institutions, highlighting the benefits this would bring to both the nation and its people. He criticized the current federal-provincial financial arrangements, pointing out that while the federation allocates funds to provinces, it also reclaims resources.

He further called for easing political pressure on PTI leadership, advising against harsh treatment of the party’s founder. “This approach is counterproductive,” he said.

Proposing a political pact, Achakzai suggested that parties agree not to undermine each other and allow the elected government to complete its five-year term without interference. He remarked, “There is no advantage in imprisoning political opponents,” and stressed that engaging in dialogue or meetings with political leaders should not be viewed as controversial.
