Karachi Port has handled about 101,000 tonnes of imported cargo after two vessels carrying wheat and fertiliser arrived, according to port details. The ships were given priority berthing so that their cargo could be unloaded in a timely manner. Officials described the development as significant for the handling of essential commodities.

According to port details, about 50,000 tonnes of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertiliser are being handled, while 51,000 tonnes of imported wheat are also being unloaded. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said handling the two vessels at the same time reflected the operational capacity of Karachi Port Trust (KPT).

Minister links port capacity to food security

The minister said timely transport and availability of essential commodities were crucial for ensuring food security. He also said that enhancing cargo-handling capacity at the country’s ports remained a key priority. The arrival and simultaneous handling of the vessels were aimed at supporting the supply of essential agricultural and food commodities.

Rear Admiral Jamil Akhter, chairman of Karachi Port Trust, provided these details to the media in Karachi. In his statement, he said KPT had already handled more than 54 million tons of cargo. He added that the port expects record-breaking shipments in the coming years due to the latest operational systems at South Asia Pakistan Terminals.

A cargo passage worth almost $8-10 billion is being planned along the sea front from Karachi Port to Port Qasim. The project is intended to speed up cargo movement, including fluids and all kinds of shipments. According to details, the freight corridor will include a railway track, a road, and LNG and POL pipelines.

Foreign corporations, including Chinese and Western firms, have shown concern related to the project, according to details. KPT is also planning an expressway from Kemari to Northern Bypass to provide a smoother entrance road system to the port.
