MQM-P Leader Urges PM Shehbaz Sharif to Reinstate Kamran Tessori as Sindh Governor

In a significant political development from Karachi, a senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has publicly demanded the reinstatement of Kamran Tessori as the governor of Sindh. Farooq Sattar, who holds the position of Senior Deputy Convener within MQM-P, urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to revisit the recent decision that led to Tessori’s removal. Sattar emphasized the importance of restoring Tessori to his gubernatorial post, highlighting the need for political stability and mutual respect among coalition partners.

Kamran Tessori, a prominent figure within MQM-P, was relieved of his duties as Sindh governor last week. The federal government swiftly appointed Nehal Hashmi, a veteran politician from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as his successor. This abrupt change sparked discontent within MQM-P ranks, with party officials expressing their dissatisfaction over not being consulted prior to the decision. The lack of prior communication between the federal government and MQM-P has added a layer of complexity to the coalition dynamics at the Centre.

Tessori’s tenure as governor began in October 2022, following the departure of his predecessor, Imran Ismail. His appointment was seen as a strategic move to strengthen MQM-P’s influence in Sindh, a province where the party has historically held considerable sway. Meanwhile, Nehal Hashmi, who took his oath of office last week, sought to ease tensions by reaffirming the alliance between MQM-P and PML-N. He underscored that despite the gubernatorial change, the coalition partnership remains intact and both parties continue to work together at the federal level.

Nehal Hashmi’s political career spans several decades, marked by his legal expertise and active engagement in national politics. Born in Karachi on January 28, 1960, Hashmi began practicing law in the late 1980s. During his student years, he founded the All Pakistan Youth League, showcasing his early commitment to political activism. His formal association with PML-N began in 1992, and he quickly rose through the ranks, serving as an adviser on law, justice, and human rights to then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif between 1997 and 1999.

Hashmi has been involved in numerous high-profile legal cases, including those related to Nawaz Sharif and the tribunal concerning Murtaza Bhutto. His political journey has seen both highs and lows; he served as president of PML-N Karachi in 2012 and was appointed general secretary of the party in Sindh in August 2014. He was elected to the Senate of Pakistan in March 2015, serving until February 2018. However, his career faced a setback in 2017 when he was expelled from PML-N over a controversial statement linked to the Panama Papers case. His party membership was reinstated in 2021, reflecting a reconciliation within party ranks.

In a related development, Hashmi was sentenced in February 2018 to one month in prison and fined Rs50,000 in a contempt of court case. This verdict led to the termination of his Senate membership and a five-year disqualification from holding public office. He completed his sentence and was subsequently released, marking a turbulent chapter in his political life.

The recent changes in Sindh’s gubernatorial office underscore the delicate balance of power within Pakistan’s coalition politics. MQM-P’s insistence on Kamran Tessori’s reinstatement highlights the ongoing negotiations and power struggles that define the federal-provincial relationship. As the political landscape evolves, all eyes remain on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s next moves and the implications for governance in Sindh.
