In a significant diplomatic exchange on Monday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the current state of bilateral relations and the broader regional dynamics. This dialogue comes at a critical juncture as tensions continue to rise in the Gulf region, prompting Pakistan to reaffirm its commitment to peace and stability.

During the call, Prime Minister Sharif provided a detailed update on Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at fostering a ceasefire and easing the mounting tensions in the area. He took the opportunity to extend heartfelt greetings to both the Iranian president and the people of Iran on the occasions of Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz, two important cultural and religious celebrations. President Pezeshkian warmly reciprocated these wishes, conveying his regards to the people of Pakistan as well.

Sharif also expressed Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with the Iranian nation amid the current regional challenges. He offered condolences for the lives lost in recent conflicts and conveyed prayers for the swift recovery of those injured. This gesture underscored Pakistan’s empathetic stance and its desire to support its neighbor during difficult times.

The prime minister voiced serious concern over the escalating situation in the Gulf, emphasizing the urgent need for all involved parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomatic engagement over confrontation. He stressed that peaceful resolution through negotiation remains the most viable path forward. Furthermore, Sharif highlighted the critical importance of unity and cooperation among Muslim countries, noting that solidarity within the Islamic world is essential to overcoming the present challenges and fostering long-term regional harmony.

Assuring Iranian leadership of Pakistan’s steadfast commitment, Sharif reiterated his country’s role as a proactive and constructive player in promoting peace and stability across the region. This conversation reflects Pakistan’s broader foreign policy approach, which seeks to balance regional interests while advocating for dialogue and conflict resolution.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions have been underway involving multiple regional actors. Pakistan, alongside Turkey and Egypt, has reportedly taken on the role of mediators, engaging in separate discussions with U.S. officials, including diplomat Steve Otstkoff, as well as with Iran’s foreign minister. In parallel, Turkey’s foreign minister also communicated directly with his Iranian counterpart, addressing the recent developments and exploring avenues for reducing hostilities in the Middle East.

These coordinated diplomatic endeavors underline the shared interest of regional powers in stabilizing the Gulf and preventing further conflict. Pakistan’s active involvement in these talks demonstrates its dedication to fostering peaceful coexistence and constructive dialogue among neighboring countries.
