Madhubala, a female elephant residing at Karachi Safari Park, has recently experienced a sudden decline in health. She developed swelling in her right hind thigh, which has rendered her unable to use that leg.

The Safari Park administration confirmed the swelling in Madhubala’s right hind thigh as the reason for her immobility. She was relocated to the Safari Park in November 2024 from Karachi Zoo, where she was the only elephant.

On Tuesday, Madhubala unexpectedly collapsed to the ground and required assistance from a crane to stand back up. Previously, she had endured infections and abscesses in her feet. Although she had been suffering from calcium deficiency in recent days, her condition had shown some improvement.

Medical tests have been conducted to assess her condition. A veterinary expert revealed that Madhubala is currently being treated with antibiotics due to concerns about a possible bacterial infection. However, further examinations are necessary to identify the exact cause of her illness.

The expert also noted that extended exposure to hard flooring is a significant factor contributing to foot problems in elephants. Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) stated they were unaware of Madhubala’s current health status.

After her transfer from Karachi Zoo to Safari Park in November 2024, Madhubala was housed with two other elephants, Sonia and Malika. Unfortunately, Sonia passed away approximately one month after the transfer.
