US and Iran Exchange Strikes as Fragile Ceasefire Collapses

The United States and Iran engaged in a fresh series of attacks on Tuesday, shattering a fragile period of relative calm and sparking fears of a renewed escalation in their ongoing conflict. This latest confrontation represents the most intense exchange between the two nations in several weeks.

US Central Command announced that American forces launched strikes targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) positions throughout Iran. The operations focused on air defense systems, radar installations, maritime infrastructure, mine-laying facilities, and communication sites.

Meanwhile, Iranian media reported multiple attacks across the country, including strikes near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has warned that vessels passing through this crucial waterway must obtain permission or face consequences.

In retaliation, Iran targeted US military assets in Jordan and Iraq, with official statements also mentioning attacks in Bahrain. The IRGC claimed that its missile strikes in Jordan caused significant US casualties; however, initial assessments from US officials indicated no American deaths.

Jordan’s armed forces reported intercepting 10 out of 13 ballistic missiles that entered their airspace, with the remaining three falling in unpopulated areas. Bahrain confirmed it destroyed Iranian drones attempting to infiltrate its airspace.

The IRGC further stated that combined missile and drone strikes hit US bases in Erbil, northern Iraq, resulting in several US personnel deaths, though neither Iraq nor the US has confirmed these claims.

This exchange marks the first serious combat since July, ending a period during which both sides refrained from direct attacks but showed little interest in resuming negotiations. The lull had come as the conflict drained resources on both sides. Iran’s struggling economy has been severely impacted by the war, and its conventional military capabilities have weakened. Concurrently, the US military has reportedly depleted much of its global stockpile of precision long-range missiles amid rising fuel prices and upcoming congressional elections.

Despite the renewed hostilities, both sides issued defiant statements. US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in America’s position, highlighting control over the Hormuz Strait and Iran’s economic difficulties, while urging the Iranian people to rise against their government.

Conversely, Iran’s joint military command warned that continued US aggression would provoke heavier, more widespread retaliation, cautioning any country cooperating with the US military to expect serious consequences.

In a tragic development, five people were killed and around 50 to 68 wounded at a wedding near Sirik, a coastal area by the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian reports. Among the dead was a 4-year-old child. The US has not commented on this incident.

Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the attack as part of a series of atrocities, referencing a previous blast at a girls’ school in Minab that killed 160 people on the war’s first day. While the Pentagon has not officially addressed the Minab incident, some sources suggest it may have resulted from outdated US targeting data.

The Iranian government vowed to respond firmly to these “savage crimes” and criticized international silence, warning that those who remain passive or justify such acts will face consequences in the future.
