Serbian Parents Sentenced in Retrial Over 2023 School Shooting

In a significant development in the aftermath of the tragic 2023 school shooting in Belgrade, the parents of the teenage perpetrator have been handed jail sentences following a retrial. The boy, aged 13 at the time, fatally shot eight girls, one boy, and a school guard at Vladislav Ribnikar school, shocking Serbia and raising urgent questions about gun control and juvenile justice. The retrial focused on the accountability of the parents, scrutinizing their role in the events leading up to the massacre.

The case has drawn widespread attention due to the young age of the shooter and the severity of the crime, which remains one of the deadliest school shootings in the region’s recent history. The sentencing of the parents marks a rare legal outcome where guardians are held responsible for the actions of their minor children in such violent incidents. This decision could set a precedent for future cases involving parental liability in juvenile crimes across Serbia and beyond.

Meanwhile, the tragedy has sparked ongoing debates about school safety measures, mental health support for youth, and stricter regulations on firearm access in Serbia. The community continues to mourn the loss of the nine victims, while authorities and policymakers face mounting pressure to implement reforms aimed at preventing similar incidents. The court’s ruling underscores the broader societal impact of the shooting and the complex legal and ethical challenges it presents.
