Sudan has taken its accusations against Ethiopia to the UN Security Council and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, following a run of lethal drone strikes this year.

In a late Sunday statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group had used Ethiopian territory to carry out “brazen aggression” against “civilian sites and power stations” in Sudan. The strikes caused hundreds of casualties and disrupted essential services. The ministry said the incidents put Ethiopia “before international law”.

Sudan’s army accuses Ethiopia of aiding the RSF

Sudan’s military has repeatedly accused Ethiopia of helping the RSF, which has been fighting it in a civil war since April 2023. Ethiopia has accused the Sudanese military of backing rebels linked to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Khartoum has denied that charge.

The ministry’s statement was issued alongside a report from the army-led Transitional Sovereignty Council. The report alleged 70 assaults between February 15 and October 27 involving 187 one-way attack drones. According to the report, the attacks killed or wounded 484 civilians and killed 176 Sudanese soldiers, while another 200 soldiers were wounded.

The report said armed drones had been launched from Ethiopian soil since February 2026 to strike Sudanese cities and civilians. It named three launch sites: Asosa Airport in western Ethiopia, the Kurmuk-Gizen border area, and the Bahir Dar airbase in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. Last month alone, it said, 28 attacks were carried out using 97 drones.

October 9 attack on displaced families in Wad el-Mahi

The report cited an October 9 attack on displaced families in Wad el-Mahi, in Sudan’s Blue Nile region near the Ethiopian border. It said the strike killed 30 civilians, including 26 women and four children, and wounded 100 others.

UN chief condemns escalating drone strikes in Sudan

A spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday that he was “appalled” by the impact of drone strikes in Sudan. His remarks came days after a strike on a market in RSF-controlled territory in Darfur killed more than 100 people.

The spokesman said the secretary-general “strongly condemns the escalating drone attacks in Sudan by the parties to the conflict” and the heavy toll they are taking on civilians. He added that the strikes violate international humanitarian law.
