PTA Urges Mobile Users to Update CNICs to Avoid Service Disruptions

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has called on mobile users to keep their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) current to guarantee continuous mobile phone connectivity. The authority emphasized this in a recent social media announcement, highlighting its efforts to provide seamless telecommunications services nationwide.

PTA warned that SIM cards linked to expired CNICs or registered under someone else’s identity risk being blocked at any time. To prevent such disruptions, citizens are urged to renew their expired identity cards without delay.

In a significant development, the PTA reiterated that this initiative is part of its broader commitment to safeguard consumer rights and maintain dependable telecom services. Previously, the authority had also advised users to activate a complimentary service designed to block unintended balance deductions caused by mobile data usage.

On March 19, 2026, in Islamabad, the PTA highlighted the risk of unexpected charges when data bundles expire or are fully consumed, as mobile internet then switches to higher Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) rates. To mitigate this, telecom providers offer a “Balance Save” or PAYG blocker service, which automatically halts internet access once the data allowance is exhausted, thereby protecting users’ remaining balances.
