Karachi Defence woman death probe: husband gives statement

Police in Karachi are investigating the death of a 36-year-old woman whose body was found on Monday inside a residential flat in Defence Phase 8. The woman has been identified as Shumaila. An initial police inquiry suggests she may have taken her own life by severing her hamstrings.

The body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for a post-mortem examination and the required legal formalities.

Husband’s account and family’s stance in the case

Police said Shumaila’s husband told investigators that she had injected a boil on her wrist. Her family also told officers that her mental health had not been stable.

South SSP Mahzoor Ali said the woman’s brother had declined to pursue legal action. Since the body was discovered, police have been gathering information about the woman, her family and the circumstances of her death.

The new statements have added detail to the inquiry, but police information does not yet establish exactly how Shumaila died.

Workers questioned over North Karachi elderly couple killing

Police have detained several workers for questioning over the murder of an elderly couple whose bodies were found inside their house in the Sir Syed area of North Karachi.

According to police sources, a carpenter, a plumber and a painter had been working at the property. The plumber had finished his job, while the carpenter and painter were still on site.

Officers have recorded statements from the workers, the victims’ close relatives and neighbours, and have obtained CCTV footage from the area. Police said, however, that the footage showing people going in and out of the house is unclear.

A mobile phone recovered from the house has been sent for forensic examination. Police are also seeking information from family members travelling from Canada, and the couple’s children are expected in Karachi by tomorrow, according to police.

Post-mortem reports show severe head injuries

Post-mortem reports have revealed severe head injuries to both victims. According to the police surgeon, the dead were Muhammad Yamin, aged between 65 and 70, and his wife, Nafis Akhtar, aged between 60 and 65, who were found inside their house.

Both had deep and serious wounds to their heads, and investigators suspect they were killed with a heavy, blunt object.
