Tigers Aim to Seal Series with Skubal on Mound Against Brewers

The Detroit Tigers are set to close out their series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon, banking on the impressive form of left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal. Skubal comes into the final game riding a wave of strong performances, having struck out a season-high 10 batters in his previous start against the Boston Red Sox. Despite chilly conditions, he allowed only one run over six innings, extending a remarkable stretch where he has given up just one run in four of his five starts this season.

Currently holding a 3-2 record with a 2.08 ERA, Skubal has quietly emerged as one of Detroit’s most dependable pitchers early in the season. Tigers manager AJ Hinch commended Skubal’s mental toughness, highlighting his ability to stay focused and win critical at-bats even when not at peak sharpness. A more effective change-up in his last outing significantly contributed to his elevated strikeout count, though Skubal himself acknowledges there is still room to refine his pitch execution.

Notably, Skubal has a strong history against the Brewers, having allowed just one run over 13 2/3 innings in previous matchups while striking out 19 batters. This track record adds confidence as Detroit seeks to close the series.

Milwaukee will respond with right-hander Brandon Sproat, who is still pursuing his first major league victory. Sproat is coming off his best start of the season, limiting the Toronto Blue Jays to one run over 6 2/3 innings in a close win. The 25-year-old credited his improved rhythm and aggressive pitching style for the strong outing, further encouraged by support from Brewers manager Pat Murphy.

The three-game series is currently tied, with Detroit bouncing back from a heavy defeat to secure a 5-2 victory on Wednesday. First baseman Spencer Torkelson also regained form, hitting his first home run of the season following a 31-homer campaign last year.

With favorable weather conditions expected and momentum on their side, the Tigers will depend on Skubal’s continued strong pitching to clinch the series. Meanwhile, the Brewers hope Sproat can build on his confidence and deliver a breakthrough performance to extend the contest.
