Iran Expresses Gratitude to Pakistan for Support Amid Rising US-Israel Tensions

In a significant diplomatic gesture, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi extended his sincere thanks to the government and people of Pakistan for standing in solidarity with Iran during a period of heightened aggression from the United States and Israel. This appreciation was conveyed through a message posted on the social media platform X, where Araghchi chose to communicate in Urdu, emphasizing the close cultural and diplomatic ties between the two neighboring countries.

Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring the nation’s reliance on divine guidance and resilience in the face of external pressures. He described the current period as “blessed, divine, and spiritual,” highlighting Iran’s steadfast determination to protect its national interests despite the ongoing hostilities. This statement reflects Tehran’s broader narrative of resilience amid what it perceives as unjustified foreign interventions.

Expressing deep gratitude, Araghchi acknowledged Pakistan’s strong show of support, which he said was a clear demonstration of solidarity with Iran’s government and people during these challenging times. This backing from Pakistan, he noted, sends a powerful message of unity against the aggressive actions carried out by the United States and Israel. The gesture is particularly meaningful given the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region, where Pakistan has often played a balancing role.

The backdrop to this exchange is the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which intensified after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iranian targets on February 28. In retaliation, Tehran responded with missile and drone strikes targeting US military bases throughout the Gulf region, including locations in Saudi Arabia. These developments have significantly raised tensions, threatening regional stability and impacting global energy markets.

Earlier this month, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister publicly offered to mediate indirect talks between Tehran and Washington in an effort to de-escalate the violence. He voiced Pakistan’s support for Iran’s right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, a stance that aligns with Islamabad’s broader foreign policy of promoting dialogue and regional peace. During a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Pakistan conveyed Iran’s willingness to refrain from developing nuclear weapons, while also highlighting the US demand for a complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program as a sticking point in negotiations.

Despite Pakistan’s commitment to stand by Iran, the Foreign Minister made it clear that Islamabad does not intend to become embroiled in a wider regional conflict. This nuanced position reflects Pakistan’s careful diplomatic balancing act amid the intensifying US-Israel campaign against Iran, which has sent shockwaves through the Middle East and disrupted global energy supplies.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump recently called on countries dependent on Gulf oil to take responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s energy supplies pass. However, his appeal for a coalition to escort ships through the strait was met with reluctance, as key allies such as Japan and Australia declined to deploy naval forces to the region, signaling the complexities of international cooperation in this volatile environment.

Adding to the tension, explosions were reported in Tehran on Monday, coinciding with Israeli claims of conducting extensive overnight airstrikes. Witnesses in the Iranian capital described hearing blasts and observing the activation of air defense systems, though the precise targets of these attacks remain unclear. These incidents underscore the fragile security situation in Iran’s heartland and the ongoing risks of escalation.

As the conflict continues to unfold, the diplomatic exchanges between Iran and Pakistan highlight the importance of regional alliances and the pursuit of peaceful resolutions amid growing international pressures. Pakistan’s role as a mediator and supporter of Iran’s sovereignty could prove crucial in preventing further deterioration of stability in the Middle East.
