Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met with British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell on Wednesday to agree on strengthening Pakistan-UK cooperation in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and other mutual security concerns. The discussions took place during Dar’s five-day official visit to the UK, where he also engaged with other senior British officials in London.

During his meeting with Powell, Dar emphasized Pakistan’s crucial role in fostering regional peace and security, highlighting the country’s ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at dialogue, de-escalation, and negotiated resolutions. Both sides exchanged perspectives on significant regional and global security issues, including developments in South Asia, the Middle East, and Afghanistan.

Earlier that day, Dar held delegation-level talks with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband. The two leaders assessed the entire scope of bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United Kingdom, agreeing to establish a formal, structured mechanism for regular dialogue between their foreign ministries. This framework aims to enhance cooperation across all sectors and systematically review progress in key areas.

They underscored the necessity of continuous high-level engagement and closer coordination on issues of shared interest. Their discussions also covered regional and international developments, with particular attention to the evolving situation in the Middle East. Dar shared insights on Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation initiatives in the region, noting the advances made through these efforts. Miliband acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting dialogue, diplomacy, and stability in the Middle East.

Additionally, the talks addressed concerns related to the Indus Waters Treaty and regional security. Dar raised serious concerns about India’s ongoing violations of its international commitments, emphasizing the importance of adherence to international law and treaty obligations. He also highlighted the threat posed to Pakistan’s peace and security by terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory.

Both sides recognized the significant role played by the Pakistani diaspora in the UK in strengthening the longstanding ties and people-to-people connections between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Dar also met with UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Dar welcomed the positive momentum in ties and stressed the importance of sustained engagement to further bolster political, economic, and institutional links. The discussions explored ways to enhance trade and investment, expand collaboration in emerging sectors, strengthen climate cooperation, and promote cultural exchanges.

Dar underscored the valuable contribution of the Pakistani diaspora in the UK, describing it as a vital bridge between the two countries. Minister Doughty expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and stability and reiterated the UK’s commitment to maintaining close engagement with Pakistan on bilateral and regional matters.
