On August 11 at approximately 11:15 a.m., an armed individual identified as Muhammad Hussain opened fire on a patrolling security team on Mall Road in Rawalpindi, resulting in injuries to one security official. The security forces returned fire, killing the assailant during the exchange.
Authorities recovered a mobile phone and other items from Hussain, which are currently being examined for further evidence and potential connections. The police indicated that Hussain was affiliated with a political party but did not disclose its name.
Notably, sources have linked Hussain to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), describing him as an active party worker who maintained contact with its leadership and acted on their directives. He was reportedly involved in violent activities during protest sit-ins, including provoking confrontations, stone-pelting, and firing at security personnel.
Further investigations are ongoing to clarify his political ties and the significance of the recovered evidence. Reports also suggest Hussain was a resident of Khyber district and had PTI flags, bullets, and weapons in his possession. Visuals broadcasted showed a red-and-green cloth, a firearm, and ammunition allegedly seized from him.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar condemned the attack, criticizing what he termed PTI’s “politics of violence.” He emphasized that firing on security forces is unjustifiable and highlighted previous instances where PTI members allegedly arrived armed at protests. Tarar questioned the nature of PTI’s upcoming long march to Islamabad scheduled for September 27, suggesting the incident raised concerns about future demonstrations.
The minister also linked the attack to PTI’s broader political agenda, accusing the party of attempting to disrupt law and order and destabilize the country, especially amid recent diplomatic agreements with Saudi Arabia and Turkey. He asserted that the government would not tolerate any attempts to target security personnel or disturb public peace.
In response, PTI Islamabad regional president Amir Mughal rejected any association with the shooting, affirming the party’s commitment to peaceful and unarmed political activism. He called for transparency regarding the incident and urged authorities not to malign PTI by linking it to violence or terrorism. Mughal highlighted the party’s electoral success in the February 8, 2024 general elections as evidence of public support and dismissed previous allegations of violence against PTI.
Rawalpindi police continue to investigate the case, scrutinizing the recovered items and Hussain’s background. The conflicting claims between security sources and PTI remain unverified independently.
