Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to eradicating all forms of torture while urging the global community to hold accountable those responsible for alleged human rights abuses in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Marking the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the prime minister expressed solidarity with torture survivors worldwide and emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to upholding human dignity, justice, and fundamental rights.

He described this day as a solemn reminder of the intrinsic dignity and value of every individual. Sharif condemned torture and all forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment as unacceptable violations of both international law and Islamic teachings.

Highlighting Pakistan’s ongoing efforts, he stated that the country would continue to enhance the enforcement of relevant legislation, pursue legal and institutional reforms, and strengthen national frameworks designed to protect victims and ensure perpetrators face justice.

Sharif underscored the necessity of providing torture victims with comprehensive medical, psychological, legal, and social assistance.

In a significant development, he voiced concern over the systematic use of torture by foreign occupying forces, specifically citing Palestine and IIOJK. He noted that people in these regions endure state repression, torture, and degrading treatment by occupying authorities.

The prime minister called on the international community to denounce these actions and ensure accountability for such violations.

He drew attention to decades of reported human rights abuses in IIOJK, including arbitrary arrests, custodial torture, enforced disappearances, collective punishment, restrictions on freedom of expression, and suppression of political dissent.

Sharif referenced findings from international human rights organizations and United Nations human rights mechanisms that have raised serious concerns about the situation in the disputed territory.

He urged the United Nations, human rights bodies, and the global community to foster effective international cooperation to protect victims of torture and hold violators accountable.

Reiterating Pakistan’s political, diplomatic, and moral support for the people of IIOJK, Sharif reaffirmed Islamabad’s backing for their right to self-determination in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
