Poland Summons Israeli Diplomat Over Detention of Gaza Aid Activists

Poland has formally summoned Israel’s chargé d’affaires following the detention of international activists, including two Polish nationals, who were part of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla. This diplomatic action was confirmed by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Thursday, emphasizing the urgent need for the immediate release of the detained citizens.

The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid destined for the blockaded Gaza Strip, was intercepted by Israeli forces earlier this week, escalating tensions between Warsaw and Jerusalem. The vessel’s mission involved volunteers from multiple countries aiming to deliver essential supplies to Gaza.

In a significant development, Sikorski took to social media to assert Poland’s official position, demanding that the detained activists be treated in accordance with international legal standards. He stated firmly, “We demand the immediate release of Polish citizens and their treatment in a manner consistent with international standards.” This public declaration highlights the seriousness with which Poland views the safety and legal rights of its nationals.

The decision to summon the Israeli chargé d’affaires reflects increasing diplomatic friction over the handling of aid workers and international volunteers in the region. The current whereabouts and condition of the two Polish activists remain a primary concern for the Polish government, which is actively seeking consular access to them.

The interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla marks the latest maritime confrontation involving international aid convoys challenging the blockade of Gaza. Polish officials have indicated they are closely monitoring the situation and are engaged in efforts to ensure the welfare of their citizens detained during the mission.
