At least 21 people have been killed and 40 others wounded in a drone strike in Nyala, Darfur, according to a medical source and witnesses.

A resident said the strike hit a market in the north of the city around 8pm (18:00 GMT) on Monday. Nyala serves as the de facto capital of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF.

A medic at Nyala Hospital said on Tuesday that 21 people had been killed and more than 40 injured.

Armed men reportedly frequented the targeted market

Another resident said the market was often visited by armed men, particularly RSF fighters.

The Sudanese military, which has fought the RSF since April 2023, regularly strikes Nyala. The RSF has declared a rival administration there to the internationally recognised, military-backed government in Khartoum.
